First round nerves ran high on both sides in the Group C opener between Korea Republic and England, ultimately ending in a 1-1 draw. Korea Republic took an early lead with a penalty kick awarded in the 15th minute. Although England sought a quick response, the Koreans retained the narrow lead at the half. England found an equalizer in the 68th minute, capitalizing on a free kick and Korea Republic’s failed clearance. Despite close chances, neither team was able to score a gamewinner before the final whistle.

Despite a strong showing by the African side, Nigeria was unable to achieve the lead against Mexico in a draw that ended 1-1 off goals scored in the first half. The Mexicans were the first on the board, capitalizing on a poor clearance by the Nigerian goalkeeper. Nigeria peppered Mexico’s defense with 20 shots throughout the whole game, but only hit the back of the net in the closing minutes before the half. With identical results, all four teams in Group C stand completely even heading into the second set of games.

France posted the greatest margin of victory of the tournament thus far with a 5-1 rout of Costa Rica to open Group D. The French dominated with 63% of the possession and 29 shots (half of those on frame). After a stunning 4-0 first half that included a penalty kick and own goal by Costa Rica, France netted one more goal early in the second. Costa Rica, despite being clearly outmatched by the UEFA champion, persisted and notched a consolation goal in injury time.

Looking to advance from group play for the first time, New Zealand opened with a 2-0 defeat of tournament debutant Paraguay.
